…A lot of the Season 5 info came from Executive Producer Sara Colleton, who revealed that it will pick up right where Season 4 ended, enabling the audience to grieve along with Dexter. As for whether or not Deb will ever “know” about Dex, Colleton said it was “important for the series (vs. a film) for nobody to know Dexter’s real identity but Dexter“. The writers are hesitant to go in that direction due to how it would spoil the dynamic between the two characters. Carpenter chimed in that she was “scared” to think along those lines.

That’s such a chickenshit response. This isn’t Days of Our Lives or Friends, Dexter is a flagship show on basic cable. It’s a show (supposedly) for intelligent adults, ones who are capable of watching a relationship change over time. Dynamics that never change, especially on dramas, become stale. If they want to do four more seasons of serial-killer-of-the-week then the show’s central point of tension- that Dexter does bad shit and gets increasingly close to being discovered- will diminish the longer they hold out.

agreed. If they go all “keep the formula because it makes us money!” I’ll be disappointed. I loved the end of s4 because it was very direction-changing. bah.
From what I’ve heard there won’t be a big bad like Trinity, which could mean a return to season 2 coolness. On the other hand they did talk a lot about Dexter having to deal with the grieving process, and the Dexter-in-goofy-suburbia was far and away the worst part of season 4.
I don’t mind the goofy Dexter in suburbia stuff when it’s done with a sense of humour versus serious business. Dexter having dinner with Rita’s mother comes to mind as a good moment. But yeah…
Although I do like the way Dexter is slowly growing, as in he is becoming more aware of his emotions and stuff like that, which even in the beginning the audience was shown while he was ignorant to them himself. That was kind of cool and it’s interesting to watch it catch up.
Although apparently there’s not going to be another big serial killer stand off in season 5 so that will be a breath of fresh air.

I don’t know if I really want to watch “Dexter Morgan, wacky Dad”. With the writer’s nasty habit of killing off all the interesting characters there’s not much left going for the show apart from Dexter looking cool and killing people.
