Grandmaster Bugs

22 Feb

Chuck Jones, perhaps the greatest of all the WB animators (his only real competitors are Clampett and Avery, and even that’s a stretch) died 8 years ago today. His contribution to animation, and indeed to comedy, is incomparable. The following three cartoons are preserved for posterity in the U.S Library of Congress, and they represent a genius at the height of his power. Apologies for the quality of these, but as always with YouTube you have to work with what you have.

You know, it was Chuck Jones who first taught a younger me the difference that those then seemingly random names at the start of a film or cartoon could make. I made the connection between Chuck Jones and the cartoons I loved the most, and for the first time started to look into the difference a good director makes. Animation is lesser for no longer having Chuck, but better forever for having had him.

Also, his Road Runner cartoons hold a special place in my lolz.

Part of what makes Road Runner so great is that after the very first one Chuck Jones made a bible of what could and couldn’t happen. The cartoons are madness, but nobody acts out of character- and that’s the beauty of it.
